“His Grace has left the premises, Your Grace.”

Harriet nodded at the butler without bothering to look at him. She sipped her tea daintily. “Thank you.”

In the corner of her eye, she saw the butler bow deeply and then turn to leave. Once she was alone in the drawing room, Harrier allowed herself to release the deep sigh she’d been holding it. Stephen hadn’t even bothered to come down for breakfast this morning.

Last night, she had paced this room, waiting to hear that he had returned. And as the hours went by, she feared that she might be correct about her assumption. He really had brought his mistress to London, even though he knew what they were here to do.

Irritation stabbed her at the thought. She’d worked so hard to get him to attend the Season and now he was wasting his time with someone else. She couldn't allow this to happen. He had to get married. He is the Duke of Dunleer, for heaven’s sake!

Harriet lifted the teacup to her lips one more time, trying to take a calming sip. She didn’t have to worry. He'd said that he had been meeting his father’s business partners but Harriet wasn’t so sure she could believe that. It’s only natural what I should do.

The information of the private investigator her husband employed from time to time should be in the office Stephen now occupied. Therein laid the silver lining in Stephen’s absence because now she would be able to search the office without worrying that he would catch her. All she had to do was get the private investigator to see about the truth of Stephen’s whereabouts.

Though the tea was not yet finished, Harriet set it down on the table and got to her feet. She made her way to the door, determination set in her jaw. Once she found out the truth, then she’d handle it. Stephen should be married. And she knew exactly who the best wife for him was. Whoever he was seeing was not.
